Red Hat Network Architectures
Red Hat Network has two types of architectures to choose from based onyour business requirements:
Hosted
Individual systems connect with RHN via the Internet.
Satellite
Enterprise-level solution where all management functionality and data is kept on your local network.
In addition, Red Hat Network Proxy servers can be added to either architecture for added scalability.
Module Details
Red Hat Network Update Module
The Red Hat Network Update Module, included with all subscriptions to Red Hat Enterprise Linux, is the entry level offering from Red Hat Network. It allows you to: easily manage and update a single system, and to ensure timely access to updates from Red Hat.
- Get updates directly and immediately from Red Hat, avoiding the wait and cost of other solutions.
- Quickly, efficiently, and automatically update your systems from our intuitive GUI.
- Ensure your systems are always updated with the latest security and functionality patches.
Functionality
The following functionality comes with the Update Module:
- Simple Web user interface
- Priority email notification
- Errata information
- RPM dependency checking
Management Module
The Management Module allows for increased management capabilities and scalability of Linux deployments in your enterprise. The Management Module features all the capabilities of the Update Module, plus the functionality needed to help your IT organization lower costs and increase productivity immediately. The Management Module allows you to:
- Group systems together for easier administration. Automate formerly manual tasks.
- Manage more systems per sys admin, schedule your updates for optimal times, and efficiently search for systems and packages.
- Develop custom channels, define role-based permissions and policies, and utilize RHN's API access layer.
Please note that a management subscription cannot be used in the absence of a full RHEL subscription.
Functionality
The Management Module comes with the following functionality:
- Systems grouping
- Systems permissions
- Scheduled actions
- System search
- Package profile comparison tools
Enhanced features including custom channels, local package caching, single port access, local database repository, channel cloning and management tools, channel permissions, errata cloning and management, and complete off-network capability are available when you upgrade to Proxy and Satellite architectures.
Red Hat Network Provisioning Module
The Provisioning Module allows you to:
- Manage the complete life cycle of your Linux infrastructure.
- Deploy, configure, manage, update, and then re-deploy your Linux systems, all from a single GUI console complete with all the necessary enterprise functionality and controls.
Functionality
- Bare metal provisioning
- Existing state provisioning
- Multi-state rollback (includes snapshot based recovery)
- Configuration management
- RPM based application provisioning
- Kickstart configuration writer
When you upgrade to Satellite, you also get enhanced features including bare metal PXE boot provisioning, integrated network install tree, and configuration management profiles.
Monitoring module
he Monitoring module allows you to:
- Track the performance of your Enterprise Linux systems.
- Receive alerts regarding system performance, allowing you to take action before problems arise.
Functionality
- Monitor systems using dozens of pre-built probes for Enterprise Linux systems and popular applications from Oracle®, MySQL®, Apache®, and BEA®.
- Create custom probes for applications not included in the pre-built probe set.
- Configure warning and critical thresholds for each probe.
- Receive email or pager alerts when thresholds are reached.
- Group probes together into Probe Suites for fast deployment.
- View graphs of probe performance over time.
The Monitoring module requires that the system also have a Management module. In addition, you must have a Satellite Server to store the Monitoring data.
